From my camera to your coffee table
Brooks Falls: A Journey Into Wonder was created as a large-format coffee table book so the photographs could be experienced the way I intended them to be seen.
Inside, you’ll travel with me from the journey into Katmai to the Falls Platform, the Brooks River, Naknek Lake, Margot Creek, and the wilderness beyond the falls.
Along the way, you’ll meet the bears, follow the salmon, experience intimate moments between mothers and cubs, witness the competition for prime fishing locations, and discover some of the lessons I brought home from Brooks Falls.
This is a book meant to be opened slowly. To be left on a coffee table. To be returned to.And perhaps to inspire someone else to make a journey of their own.
I’m also honored that Mike Fitz has endorsed the book. On the back cover he writes:
“Andy Samarasena’s book captures the author’s sense of wonder for Brooks Falls, brown bears, salmon, and Katmai National Park. His rich collection of photographs bring you there.”
Why I created this book
Photography has been part of my life for more than thirty years.
Over those years, I have photographed countless people, places, and experiences. Yet very few places have affected me the way Brooks Falls did.
I went there hoping to return with photographs. I certainly did. But I also returned with a much deeper appreciation for bears, salmon, wilderness, and the delicate relationships that allow places like Katmai to remain wild.
Photography gives us an opportunity to tell the stories of places that cannot speak for themselves. My hope is that this book does exactly that.
If these photographs encourage someone to appreciate wildlife a little more deeply, learn more about Katmai, or recognize the importance of protecting wild places, then this journey will have accomplished something far greater than I originally imagined.
